In a significant statement regarding Bangladesh’s political future, Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, announced today that national elections are expected to be held by early 2026.

Speaking to the nation on December 16, 2024, Yunus outlined the potential timeline for the country’s next general election. According to him, the exact date will depend on several factors, particularly the extent of electoral reforms implemented prior to the polls.

Key Points:

  • Elections likely between late 2025 and early 2026
  • Timeline depends on pace of electoral reforms
  • Minimal reforms could lead to elections by late 2025
  • Comprehensive reforms may delay elections until mid-2026

Yunus emphasized the importance of completing major reforms before holding the elections. He stated that if only key reforms are implemented and a flawless voter list is ensured, elections could take place as soon as late 2025.

However, if additional reforms recommended by the Electoral Reforms Commission and supported by national consensus are included, the timeline may extend into the first half of 2026.
