Ip protocol numbers

IP protocol numbers are unique 8-bit numerical identifiers assigned by IANA and embedded within the IPv4/IPv6 packet header fields (e.g., 1 for ICMP, 6 for TCP, 17 for UDP) to declare exactly which upper-layer protocol handles the incoming data payload.
