Mass Shooting at Toronto's Salsa

Two Killed, Five Injured in Mass Shooting at Toronto’s Salsa on St. Clair Festival

Two men were killed and at least five other people were injured after a mass shooting erupted during Toronto’s Salsa on St. Clair festival on Saturday evening, prompting a major police investigation.

Toronto police responded to reports of gunfire near St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue shortly after 8 p.m., where thousands of people had gathered for the annual cultural festival. Officers found seven victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Two men were pronounced dead at the scene, while five others were taken for medical treatment.

Authorities initially warned the public about a possible active shooter, but later clarified there was no ongoing active shooter threat after officers secured the area. Police established three crime scenes as homicide detectives and members of the Gun and Gang Task Force launched a complex investigation.

Investigators have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects. The motive for the shooting has not been released, and police continue to appeal for witnesses and anyone with photos, videos or other information to come forward.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots before crowds fled the festival in panic. Emergency crews treated victims at the scene while officers cordoned off several blocks surrounding the festival.

Deputy Chief Frank Barredo described the violence as a reckless act that placed thousands of festivalgoers at risk. Organizers estimated that approximately 13,000 people attended the free event, Canada’s largest Latino-themed cultural festival.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the shooting, calling it a disturbing act of violence that targeted an event attended by families, children and seniors. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also expressed condolences to the victims and their families while pledging support for the ongoing investigation.

Toronto Police say the investigation remains active, and additional information is expected as detectives continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the deadly shooting.
